Prospective members should bring a photo with a dance resume and prepare a short solo of approximately 3 to 5 minutes. The piece may be in any dance style, preferably Middle Eastern or Asian, and must be performed in dance costume and make up.
Immediately following the individual solo presentations, all dancers will be taught several ensemble combinations that reflect Silk Road Dance Company’s diverse repertoire drawn from over a dozen distinct cultures. Dancers will be evaluated on the ability to quickly learn complex choreographies and to perform synchronized movements with other dancers. Please bring rehearsal clothes for this part of the audition. Dancers should expect to perform spins and turns, as well as backbends and other somewhat acrobatic elements.
Dancers should have some familiarity with the company’s mission statement available at the official website www.silkroaddance.com. Awareness of the depth and breadth of our repertoire is also helpful. Company members are expected to learn and perform all of these styles – Central Asian, Iranian, Arabic, South Asia, Ancient Egyptian, Balkan, and more. Video clips are posted at www.youtube.com/silkroaddancecompany
Membership in Silk Road Dance Company constitutes a considerable time commitment. Company summer rehearsals require attendance on Sunday afternoons in Takoma Park. Sectional rehearsals are scheduled according to individual availability. The ensemble presents numerous performances -- locally, nationally, and internationally -- throughout the year, with as many as eight to ten per month during the busiest season.
Performance costumes are the property of Silk Road Dance Company, but apprentices and members are expected to provide their own dance shoes, makeup and braids, and other personal items.
