Silk Road Dance Company, cultural understanding through Beauty and Delight
In 2005, Silk Road Dance Company was the first American dance company to be invited to perform at the UNESCO sponsored Sharq Taronalari (Melodies of the East) festival in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
Traditional festivals throughout the United States and the Washington, DC, have engaged Silk Road Dance Company. The ensemble performed in Chicago's Multicultural Festival in 2004. The ensemble also presented costumes and dances of Central Asia at the Smithsonian's Silk Road Festival. Selections from Silk Road Dance Company's Turkic dance repertoire have won the ensemble performances at Seattle's TurkFest, the North Carolina Turkish Festival, and DC's Turkish Festival. Silk Road Dance Company performed at the North Miami Florida Persian Festival and at DC's Persian Festivals. Silk Road Dance Company collaborated with guest artists from St.Petersburg, Russia, for the Herdeljezi Roma (Gypsy) Festival of 2009. The company has also participated in the Dance DC Festival, the World Dance Festival of Essex Community College, and the Takoma Park Folk Festival, Baltimore's Artscape Festival, and the Rakkasah Middle Eastern Dance Festival of New Jersey. |
